A Moravian foundation

Standing the test of time

Salemtowne, founded on the Moravian essential, "in all things, love," welcomes all people and embraces each individual's uniqueness.

We pride ourselves on being a Home, not a hospital or institution. We feel we are unique in this. Emma Fries Bahnson, leader of the Dorcas Circle

Salemtowne traces its roots to 1887, when the women of the Dorcas Circle, a local Moravian service league made up of women from all denominations across the town of Salem, came together and established Salem Home to provide shelter and comfort. Today, more than 130 years later, that feeling of belonging is what most attracts residents to make Salemtowne their home. Bahnson Hall still carries her name.

Salemtowne offers two contract choices. A modified contract, type B, and a fee-for-service contract, type C, both as defined by the North Carolina Department of Insurance. Your counselor will walk you through which fits your plans.

Join the Towne Club

Reserve and move in

Once a residence of your choice becomes available, a deposit reserves your new home. You will be asked to provide financial and health related information, and following a residency review your move-in date is confirmed.

What priority access actually means

The entrance fee assures priority access to the on-campus Babcock Health Care Center and the on-campus Masten Assisted Living Center should care be needed, either temporarily or long term. Residents who have paid an entrance fee are entitled to a discounted rate for assisted living and skilled nursing care when the need arises. A portion of the entrance fee can be used as a one-time medical tax deduction in the year paid, and a portion of the monthly fee is also considered a medical tax deduction. Residents receive this information annually to provide to their tax advisor.

The monthly fee covers utilities other than telephone, cable television, internet, a flexible dining program, maintenance, groundskeeping, security, housekeeping, recycling, the fitness center and pool, the on-campus transportation shuttle, and scheduled medical transportation.

Our residents come from different backgrounds and bring their unique qualities, talents and life experiences to complete the Salemtowne community.

“

Salemtowne's campus is large with natural areas, nature trails, fishing lake and spacious open spaces. Our Life Enrichment Department offers great entertainment and educational opportunities. We have likened it to living on a cruise ship.

“

The team members are like family. They get to know you and care about you. One of the reasons for being here is to take some of the care burden off our children's shoulders. It is a bonus for the whole family.

Katie S.

“

I've always viewed this as an insurance policy with a wonderful lifestyle attached to it. If we need a higher level of care, it's available, but in the meantime we can really enjoy life.

What is a Life Plan Community or CCRC?

In general, Life Plan Communities, also known as Continuing Care Retirement Communities, provide a continuum of care to older adults under a contract for the life of an individual or for a period longer than one year, in exchange for an entrance fee and periodic fees. A modified contract, type B, is defined by the North Carolina Department of Insurance as one that provides housing, residential services, and a specified amount of health-related services in exchange for an entrance fee and a monthly fee, with health related services provided at a subsidized rate.

The second option, a fee-for-service contract, type C, is defined by the North Carolina Department of Insurance as one that provides housing, residential services, and priority access to health-related services in exchange for an entrance fee and a monthly fee, with health related services provided at the going, full per diem rate.

Giving and careers

Two ways to be part of it without moving in

Salem Home relied on the generosity of service leagues, gifts from churches of Moravian and other denominations, friends and private donors. More than 130 years later, that is still true.

Give to Salemtowne

Our journey of caring began in 1887 with a group of women who raised the money for a permanent home on the northeast corner of Main and Walnut Streets. Gifts today carry that same work forward, from the Buckalew walking trail and the fishing area on the Babcock Campus to the art studio and the guest rooms.

  • Support the benevolence that keeps residents in their homes
  • Fund life enrichment, the art studio and the libraries
  • Honor a resident, a team member or a Moravian congregation

Build a career here

Salemtowne's vision is to be a trailblazer in senior living as an employer of choice. We are committed to providing equal employment opportunity in all of our employment practices to all applicants and team members without regard to any protected classification established by law.

  • Nursing, therapy, culinary, facilities, life enrichment and administration
  • A campus where residents know your name
